Afton Express: Your Safe & Affordable Commuter Bus.

Afton Express is a new route of BRITE and provides public commuter bus transportation between Staunton, Waynesboro, Fishersville, Charlottesville and the Fifth Street Station in Albemarle County. Free Wi-fi, comfortable seating and affordable pricing make it a smart choice for individuals commuting over Afton Mountain.

Fares

A single trip is $3.00 each way and can be paid with exact change when boarding. For regular commuters, a cost savings fare card is available for $25 for a total of 10 rides. Fare cards may be purchased directly from the bus driver. All passengers must pay a fare.

The Afton Express service operates Monday through Friday during peak commute times. Stops include:

  • Fishersville (Augusta Health) - 15 Sports Medicine Drive
  • Staunton Crossing Park and Ride Lot - 210 Crossing Way
  • Waynesboro Park and Ride - Town Center
  • UVA - Bavaro Hall
  • UVA - Moore Health Sciences Library
  • Charlottesville – W. Main at 7 th St (Amtrak)
  • Ridge McIntire Rd. at Omni Hotel
  • Charlottesville – Downtown Transit Center
  • Albemarle County – 5th Street Station
  • Albemarle County – Wegmans

Board and disembark Afton Express at easily accessible stops in Staunton, Waynesboro, Fishersville and Charlottesville to connect with other transit providers to get to your final destination. Stops in Staunton, Fishersville and Waynesboro are conveniently located at Park & Ride lots for easy, free, all-day parking options. Afton Express buses are equipped with bike racks to safely transport your bike.

The Afton Express follows Title VI of the Civil Rights Law of 1964 and the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. After recognizing the need for public transportation over Afton Mountain, area leaders and stakeholders collaborated to create an effective, long-term solution. Afton Express is made possible by a planning and funding partnership between Central Shenandoah and Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commissions, University of Virginia, Virginia Department of Rail & Public Transportation, Cities of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Charlottesville, and Counties of Augusta and Albemarle.

Guarantee Your Ride Home.

RideShare’s Guaranteed Ride Home Program (GRH) may assist Afton Express riders with a ride home from work if the unexpected happens. Eligible GRH participants are those that:

  • Take an alternative form of transportation (carpool/vanpool, transit, or bike) at least 2 days
    per week;
  • Are employed full-time or permanent part-time; and
  • Register with the RideShare program.

Qualifying rides include: you or an immediate family member has a sudden illness/injury/emergency at home, you are asked by your supervisor to work unscheduled overtime that will result in you missing your ride. All GRH trips must be unscheduled and unexpected to be eligible
